Project overview
Full Renovation of existing pool and addition of a new upper Pool and Cabana
Design approach
This pool was designed and built as a full renovation of a home originally owned by the author James Michener. The building contractor contacted me via a shared industry contact. The home renovation contractor and I met with the homeowner on-site. What was there was an indoor (enclosed) 40'x12' "lap pool." The homeowner looked at me and said, "Use your imagination." Instead of demolishing the entire pool, I decided to demo only the enclosure. I left the existing pool to serve as a catch basin for a "zero-edge" pool above, as well as a functional pool and landing for a slide down from the pool above. I tried to mimic the curve from the spectacular view of Lake Austin, running through the hill country of Central Texas. The results were dramatic to say the least. This pool was the recipient of the Grand International award for Renovation from the Master Pools Guild. It has been featured in numerous publications, including the New York Times Lifestyle section.
